While much of the world has been focused on Washington, D.C. politics pertaining to the U.S. debt ceiling and related deliberations, the District also has been working to plan a major initiative to foster much needed financial education and money management empowerment.  The 4th Annual Metro Washington Financial Planning Day will take place on November 2nd, when scores of local financial planners will provide free information and guidance on a range of financial topics, such as budgeting, saving, responsible spending and retirement planning.

The volunteers providing their expertise are professionals the Financial Planning Association (FPA) and they will engage with area residents on a one-on-one basis to answer questions and offer resources and tools to enable the participants to better understand their financial affairs.  Financial Planning Day also will include a wide gamut of workshops in which FPA professionals will teach in a classroom setting many financial literacy subjects and themes.

The government of the District of Columbia is spearheading Financial Planning Day and is collaborating with many organizations to ensure the initiative’s success, including the Financial Planning Association of the National Capital Area, the Financial Planning Association, Foundation for Financial Planning, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

The partnership among these entities is part of a larger effort that is the first of its kind in terms of city governments teaming up with thousands of financial planners nationwide who will offer financial education and programming to communities, without charge, across the U.S.  This broader effort is representative of the larger movement taking place in localities, states, and many countries that are experiencing new and effective partnerships among public and private organizations to raise the level of financial literacy among all age groups.  This trend is likely to continue as the positive outcomes of these initiatives become more widely known.
