Financial Literacy Month in April – Are You Ready to Make History?

Financial Literacy Month in the United States has a long and important history in the nation’s financial, economic, social and education sectors and has been highly effective in promulgating the importance and virtues of financial education.  As you plan for this April’s Financial Literacy Month, know that you and your organization can make even more history in financial literacy.

Below is some of the history and key milestones of Financial Literacy Month to date:

  • 2000:  The Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy began promoting April as Financial Literacy for Youth Month.
  • 2003:  The U.S. Senate designated April as Financial Literacy for Youth Month.  Eight states had already named the month of April as such.
  • 2004:  The U.S. Senate passed Resolution 316 that officially recognized April as National Financial Literacy Month.
  • 2005:  The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill supporting the objectives and virtues of Financial Literacy Month, which was passed by the Senate.
  • 2006:  The Financial Literacy and Education Commission launched a new national strategy in its report called “Taking Ownership of the Future: The National Strategy for Financial Literacy” and identified several goals for the public and private sectors to enhance education around financial literacy issues such as budgeting, savings, credit management and homeownership. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) emerged as one of the leading organizations promoting Financial Literacy Month, releasing an annual survey on financial education.
  • 2007 to 2013:  Several corporate, nonprofit, academic and other institutions promote Financial Literacy Month by hosting events and launching initiatives designed to increase awareness of financial literacy.
