In what was billed as the world’s largest financial literacy training session, Banc of California’s Financial Literacy Education Event on November 9th at the University of Southern California’s (USC) Galen Center included more than 5,000 at-risk youth from communities throughout California. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was a keynote speaker the event.

The massive financial education training event was led by Banc of California’s President, Steven Sugarman, as well as Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the 41st Mayor of Los Angeles. The event represents just the latest of many efforts by Banc of California to improve the financial literacy for California’s at-risk youth. The bank has seen significant success in its partnerships with community, non-profit, and other organizations to develop and run financial literacy classes, and the partnerships with USC and San Diego State University have proven to be among the most successful.

Many industry observers are noting that the selection of President Clinton as the event’s keynote speaker is appropriate given that under his leadership, the country enjoyed the strongest economy in a generation and the longest economic expansion in U.S. history, including the creation of more than 22 million jobs. Following his White House tenure, President Clinton launched the Clinton Foundation with the goal of strengthening economies, promote financial well-being, among other key areas of focus to improve the lives of individuals and families throughout the world.

The presence of Bill Clinton at the event also brings a greater spotlight not only to the training, but also to the larger mission of increasing awareness of the need for greater financial literacy in both developed and developing nations. Financial literacy professionals believe that the spotlight will bode very well for the continued growth of financial education programming in the months and years ahead.
