The financial literacy industry is buzzing over the Girls Inc. announcement of its grant from Disney that will be used to support financial education and other services designed to foster greater academic achievement and character development. The financial support is coming through Disney Grants, the company’s signature giving program.

Disney Grants has been a supporter of financial education for many years. In addition to the Girls Inc. funding, Disney affiliate Walt Disney World Resort also hosted youth from Central Florida’s Girls Inc. to celebrate National Sisters Day with activities to enable the girls to strengthen their friendships and develop skills in effective relationships to match the skills they are honing in financial literacy.

As Girls Inc. has become well known for providing girls with opportunities to successfully confront and solve life’s challenges, the Disney experience was particularly on target as the girls participated in events that included famous Disney sisters Elsa and Anna, whose example of successfully solving significant challenges was highly impactful for the girls..

Many other recent examples of Disney’s support of financial literacy underscore the company’s commitment to financial education. Earlier this year, more than 5,000 Disney VoluntEARS engaged in a bowl-a-thon for Junior Achievement, raising approximately $250,000 for Junior Achievement of Central Florida, which the organization will use for financial education and other key projects.

In addition to announcing the Disney Grant, Girls Inc. also revealed plans for a major advertising campaign designed to raise awareness of a broad range of issues impacting young people, including the importance of financial education. The video ads were developed to focus not only on individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, but also on donors who can help drive greater funding for Girls Inc. initiatives.

With Disney’s funding expected to spark greater success for Girls Inc. financial education programs and with the organization’s significant ad campaign poised to raise broad awareness of the importance of financial literacy, industry observers remain optimistic about the prospects for Girls Inc. continued success with financial education in the months ahead.
