The financial literacy industry was abuzz this week on news that partners and staff of PwC UW joined thousands of students and some community organizations to set the record for “The Largest Simultaneous Financial Literacy Lesson in Multiple Locations.”  More than 800 PwC volunteers and over 4,500 students in 18 different schools across three states participated in the attempt, which proved successful.

This PwC initiative was part of the company’s “Earn Your Future” campaign, which includes a $160 million investment by the firm to address youth education, including financial literacy. To set this record, PwC volunteers taught key financial lessons on topics ranging from spending and saving, to investing and money management.  Students also were asked to come up with a personal financial goal, as well as to develop a plan and timeframe within which they would achieve it.

This record comes at a time in the global financial education space when proponents are promulgating the major positive impact that higher rates of financial literacy would afford in communities throughout the world.  As more companies espouse financial literacy as a critical item on the global social agenda, we anticipate a substantial jump not only in the number of financial literacy programs and initiatives being rolled out, but also in the corresponding solutions resulting from improved financial education, literacy and capability in many regions throughout the world.
