Professional services and audit giant PwC unleashed 700 of its employees on Friday to teach financial literacy to more than 4,000 students in 150 elementary, middle and high schools, covering topics ranging from budgeting and saving to credit, debt and college preparation. The PwC financial education curriculum was created as a core component of the company’s “Earn Your Future” initiative, a $160 million commitment to increasing financial literacy among young people and other key population segments.

PwC, one of the Big Four auditors, has been a major supporter of financial education during the last few years, as the firm’s professionals leverage their expertise and financial knowledge in providing information, tools and resources to help enhance the financial capability of young people. This latest effort is just one in a series of programs rolled out by PwC as part of its continuing focus on teaching kids about key financial concepts so that they become more empowered to make decisions about their personal financial affairs.

Financial literacy professionals are applauding PwC’s deep commitment to financial education, not only because of its broad scope, but also because of the measurable impact it is having. Along those lines, the company’s “Earn Your Future” program reached 500,000 young people and 18,000 educators in only its first year, while its partners and staff contributed 150,000 volunteer service hours to education throughout the United States.

In the midst of rising student debt and the existence of increasingly complex financial products in the market, financial education for young people is at an all-time premium. PwC’s efforts in financial literacy are serving as a model for other large, multi-national corporations. As the trend of corporate backing of financial education continues to take hold, this will bode very well for the financial literacy industry in the months and years ahead.
