Vancouver Canucks Roll Out Financial Literacy Program

by | 10/01/13 | Commentary, Uncategorized

The Canucks announced that it has joined forces with the B.C. Securities Commission to offer a diverse range of financial literacy, investor education and business-related seminars to Canucks employees, affiliates and partners.  The announcement follows the release of the Commission’s research demonstrating the lack of knowledge among many investors preventing them from making informed decisions regarding their financial affairs.

As part of the partnership with the Canucks parent organization, Canucks Sports & Entertainment, the Canucks and the Commission also will jointly involve fans and high school students in their financial education initiatives. In announcing the partnership, the Commission also expressed their view that teaming up with the Canucks would enable them to reach a broad audience, including investors of all ages, which is the broad spanning target population the Commission seeks to educate regarding topics such as protection against investment fraud.

This partnership represents just the latest financial literacy alliance with professional sports organizations.  The National Football League, Major League Baseball, and other sports institutions and individuals similarly have launched financial education programs designed to assist high school students and vulnerable populations with their financial literacy.  As those programs have been successful, it is likely that we will see more partnerships and ventures with sports organizations that provide critical education, tools and resources that improve financial literacy in the months and years ahead.
